Leadership McKean is seeking candidates (individuals, universities, or organizations) to serve as executive director for Leadership McKean. This is a part-time, contracted position. The successful candidate will exhibit leadership, board experience, organizational skills, program management experience, and marketing ability.
Interested individuals or parties are invited to submit a proposal to Leadership McKean to provide services in support of leading, administering, and successfully executing the Leadership McKean program. This individual and/or organization serving in this capacity will report directly to the LM Board.
BACKGROUND For more than 15 years, Leadership McKean (“LM”), a 501c(3) organization, has been committed to building leadership and strengthening community. The core mission of LM is to develop informed and involved community leaders through a comprehensive, county-wide civic and professional enrichment program that engages leaders, connects communities and vitalizes tomorrow.
With over 300 graduates, this successful civic and personal development program boasts a legacy of leaders. The program has also realized success through the many community projects that have come to fruition and have been generated to help our county and its communities.
KEY ROLES The contracted Executive Director will fill the following key roles:
CORE: Lead an existing CORE program for 30+ established and emerging leaders looking to enhance their leadership abilities and gain a deeper understanding of McKean County’s challenges and opportunities. In the CORE program, LM participants attend eight all-day events (second Friday of each month from October to May), work on a team project, and participate in graduation ceremony.
ENGAGE: Identify, propose, organize and execute an additional segment or program aimed in fulfilment of the LM mission and targeting a broader audience. One goal of this additional “ENGAGE” component is to assist in recruiting participants for the next year’s CORE program.
RISE: Attend the monthly ‘Rising Leaders of McKean County’ (a.k.a. RISE), which operates under Leadership McKean, as a senior advisor.
TERM The contract will span a 12-month period from July 1 to June 30, aligning with the LM fiscal year. Leadership McKean is seeking to invest in a long-term relationship, based on satisfactory performance, with the selected candidate to ensure the continuity of the organization’s efforts.
SCOPE OF SERVICES This is a part-time position managing an established program that has been successful for over 15 years. The Executive Director will be directly responsible for creating, executing, and overseeing a strategic approach to growing leaders and generating positive impacts throughout the county. The scope of services includes the following:
Funding / Fund Development
Create and execute a plan to achieve desired revenues to support the strategic direction of the organization. Executive Director funding / compensation will be directly dependent on the ability to (self-)generate revenues, mostly correlated to the CORE participation level and possibly augmented with additional fee-based events, sponsorship, and grant funding opportunities identified and obtained (see Addendum).
Marketing & Promotion
Develop and execute communication and marketing plan that maximizes public awareness on the value of the program. Marketing should also highlight the CORE participants and their supporting organizations.
Manage the existing LM website that is reflective of the current program(s) and contains relevant and updated information.
Market each CORE program session on social media platform(s), including Facebook. This will include, at the minimum, the following content:
One before and one after post reflecting the key topic of the monthly CORE meeting. The post should reflect the participation of the monthly CORE program, the guest speakers and participants, the venue and sponsorship (where applicable).
One post profiling each LM participant over the course of the 8-month program.
One post on each of the LM (4-5) group projects, including the team members and details on the project.
Graduation coverage including an individual picture with corresponding quote from each of the participants on their experience, along with a group shot.
Each CORE program session should be marketed through traditional media channels.
One press release for the Bradford Era, Kane Republic and corresponding radio stations on the monthly CORE program within one week of the session.
Recruitment
Recruit and enroll 30-33 individuals in the CORE program by -
Identify prospects for program participation through networking.
Execute a well-managed online application process.
Process, review, interview, and qualify candidates / applicants for CORE program.
Facilitate a welcoming and informative acceptance procedure in a timely manner.
Program Administration / Event Planning LM Board
Identify, schedule, prepare, attend and support quarterly board meetings.
This includes, but is not limited to, coordinating meeting dates, scheduling board meetings (in-person and via Zoom), reserving venue, creating an agenda, and compiling and distributing board materials.
CORE Program
Manage program budget in partnership with the LM Treasurer. Submit all expenses to the Treasurer within 30 days for payment. Treasurer will be responsible for processing all expenses and preparing financial statement.
Schedule, coordinate, attend and administer the eight CORE sessions.
This includes, but is not limited to, timely communication with participants, collecting and distributing program materials, coordinating / reserving venues, setting up the room with water/snacks and needed technology and equipment, coordinating food orders / catering, etc.
Various LM board members are responsible for creating the agenda, inviting participants and hosting six CORE session with the exception of the first and the last.
The Executive Director is not responsible for creating and defining the agenda for these CORE days, including coordinating speakers. This is completed by various board members for CORE meetings from November thru April. The Executive Director does ensure timely communications and delivery of materials for all CORE sessions.
The Executive Director does plan the entire kickoff CORE session in October and the final session in May. In October, this includes a half-day that is open to LM graduates and prospective future participants. Executive Director will work closely with ANF Visitor Bureau on the coordination of the ‘Back Yard’ Bus Tour which serves as the May CORE session.
Collect and assess session evaluations. Report evaluation results to the board.
This includes recording the evaluations in Excel for tracking, assessing, and reporting on CORE program results long-term. Evaluation results will be reported during the quarterly LM board meetings.
Collect and store contact and session details on shared LM drive in a uniform manner across all program as a standard operating procedure.
Coordinate graduation event for LM participants at the end of the program. Seek sponsorship to offset costs. Responsible for all aspects of this celebratory event.
RISE - Rising Leaders of McKean County
Attend monthly RISE committee meetings. Support this young professional group’s efforts to attract and retain our 20-30s workforce in alignment with LM’s mission.
ENGAGE – Special Programming to Attract Broader Participation
Host 1-2 key events or program series as a mechanism for recruiting future CORE participants and to further its mission of building leadership and strengthening community throughout McKean County.
Past programs include:
Evening Leadership Session – “Remain engaged through Leadership McKean RE-VISITED”: Annual evening social event designed as a follow-up to the CORE program where LM alumni can attend key leadership session(s) to delve deeper into their professional development and how that leadership style can impact the future of our county communities, as well as, fun opportunities to re-unite and network! This session was open to the broader community as well to serve as recruitment for LM as well.
Short Programming – “Test the Water through EXPERIENCE Leadership McKean”: Short-program series that introduced professionals and non-professionals to various leadership programming opportunities during 1-2 hours sessions. The previous series was conducted one time per month between January – March and were conducted from 12:00-2:00 with an identical evening session in the evening on the same day.
Signature Event – “Above the Fold Headliner”: In 2023, Leadership McKean hosted “Unleashing Passion, Purpose, and Performance in Younger Generations” by Mark Perna. This event was open to all local school districts and included participation of 1200 students. Afternoon session includes area businesses focused on capitalizing on Gen-Z employees.
PROPOSAL REQUIREMENTS Collectively, this curated yearlong program consists of services necessary for four quarterly LM Board meetings, eight day-long CORE sessions, one graduation, 12 monthly RISE meetings, along with one or two special events for non-CORE programming.
